Aphids are small, wingless insects that usually appear in large numbers. They excrete a sugary substance (honeydew) that sticks to the surface of leaves, giving a glossy appearance. Most aphids produce several generations per year, and damage often includes terminal leaves curling downward, and sticky from honeydew. There are many species of aphids affecting fruit trees across Canada, including green apple, rosy apple, woolly apple, green peach and black cherry aphids.

An excellent hitchhiker, BMSB attacks a wide variety of plants, has no effective natural enemies in North America and has already been detected in 39 states. To date, BMSB has been intercepted coming into several Canadian provinces on imported goods and in vehicles.
